A power surge is a brief spike in voltage that travels down the same wires that feed your lights, outlets, and appliances. Most homeowners think of surges as something that only happens when lightning hits the house. The reality is that the majority of damaging surges are smaller, repeated transients from the utility grid, nearby lightning strikes, large motors cycling on and off, and even appliances inside your own home. Trent Electrical installs UL 1449 listed Type 2 surge protective devices directly on the main electrical panel. The SPD is wired to a dedicated double-pole breaker with short, straight conductors so the device can clamp a transient in nanoseconds. We size the unit to the home, verify the grounding electrode system, and check bonding at the meter, panel, water line, and ground rods before we energize the device. A surge protector with a poor ground reference is just a status light on the panel.

A panel-mounted Type 2 SPD handles the heavy work and a Type 3 point-of-use device at the equipment cleans up the residual let-through voltage.
