Small commercial repair

Commercial Outdoor Lighting Panel Repair in Rogersville

An outdoor-lighting subpanel had arced and burned. The repair corrected the damage, verified the existing feeder by measurement, and gave staff a proper way to switch the lights.

Rogersville, TNSmall commercial property

The problem

  • An outdoor-lighting subpanel was severely arced and burned inside, with damage well beyond a single device replacement.
  • Staff had been switching the site lighting by operating breakers, which is not what a branch-circuit breaker is designed for as a routine switch.
  • Circuits still in the panel were no longer serving anything useful, adding confusion to an already damaged enclosure.

What was investigated

  • The existing #6 copper feeder was evaluated against the actual operating load rather than replaced on assumption.
  • Measured load with the lighting operating was approximately 10 amps on one leg and 13 amps on the other.
  • Downstream neutral and equipment grounding conductor arrangement was checked, along with the condition of each termination.

Corrective scope

  • Burned Square D QO outdoor-lighting subpanel replaced with a 100-amp-rated Siemens panel.
  • Existing #6 copper feeder retained on 60-amp protection after the measured-load verification.
  • Neutral and equipment grounding conductors separated in the downstream panel.
  • Two unused circuits removed from active service.
  • Two 3-pole lighting contactors installed in a separate enclosure with a 2-pole control switch, so routine switching no longer happens at the breakers.
  • Conductors reterminated, torqued, tested, and the work documented.

Outcome

  • The damaged equipment is gone and the lighting panel is serviceable again.
  • Routine lighting control now happens through contactors and a control switch instead of breaker operation.
  • The panel reflects what is actually in service, with torque and testing documented for the property's records.
