Use this schedule as a starting point, then follow the instructions printed on each alarm because models can differ.
Every Month
Press and hold the test button on every smoke alarm and carbon-monoxide alarm until it completes its test.
If the alarms are interconnected, confirm that testing one device causes the other compatible alarms to sound.
Look for missing alarms, loose mounting, blocked sensor openings, damaged housings or warning lights.
Make sure nobody has removed a battery or disconnected an alarm following a cooking or steam-related nuisance alarm.
Dust can build up around the sensing chamber and cause nuisance alarms or interfere with normal operation.
Gently remove dust with a soft brush or vacuum attachment if permitted by the manufacturer.
Do not test a smoke alarm using a candle, cigarette, burning paper or another source of real flame.
