What I Notice First When I Pull Into a Property

Every electrician has their own routine. Mine starts before I ever unload a tool.

As I'm pulling into a driveway, I'm already looking around. Most people see a house. I see clues.

The first thing I notice is the electrical service. I look at the overhead wires, the weatherhead, and the meter. Are tree limbs rubbing the service drop? Does the meter base show signs of rust or water getting in? Has the service been upgraded, or is it still original to the house?

Those first few seconds can tell me a lot.

Then I Start Looking at Everything Else

Around Church Hill and throughout Hawkins County, it's common to see detached garages, barns, workshops, and sheds. One thing I've learned is that every outbuilding has a story. Some were wired when the house was built. Others were added years later. Some were professionally installed, while others... well... you can usually tell someone had a buddy who 'knew electrical.'

I've found extension cords being used as permanent wiring, underground cables that weren't buried correctly, old breaker panels feeding multiple buildings, and plenty of other things that make you stop and scratch your head.

The Little Details Add Up

I also pay attention to the little details.

An outdoor receptacle with a broken cover. A service mast that's leaning. Conduit that's been hit by a mower. Missing panel screws. None of those things seem like a big deal by themselves, but together they help paint a picture of how the electrical system has been maintained over the years.

Age Doesn't Always Tell the Whole Story

One thing that surprises people is that the age of a house doesn't always tell the whole story.

I've been in older farmhouses that had beautifully maintained electrical systems, and I've been in much newer homes where shortcuts caused problems long before they should have.

That's why I never assume anything.

The Panel Usually Confirms My First Impression

Once I open the electrical panel, I usually find out if my first impressions were right.

Sometimes everything looks great. Sometimes I find loose connections, overheated breakers, double-tapped circuits, or signs that moisture has found its way inside. Other times, I close the panel knowing the homeowner's electrical system is in great shape.

Those are the calls I enjoy the most.

Every House Has a Story

Being an electrician isn't just about replacing breakers or installing new panels. It's about understanding how a home has changed over the years and making sure the electrical system has kept up with those changes.

I think that's one of the reasons I still enjoy this work after all these years. Every house is different. Every customer has a different story. Every panel has something to teach you.

Most homeowners never think about their electrical system until something quits working. My job is to notice the things that most people never see, catch small problems before they become big ones, and help homeowners understand what's going on without making it more complicated than it needs to be.

Sometimes, the most important part of the job starts before I ever knock on the front door.
